Whole body vibration is really "massage using vibration, the whole body simultaneously".

Whole body vibration is fundamentally different to all other forms of massage (manual, hand held devices, bed, etc) in that it acts from the inside out. This is because vibration is transferred from the plate through the balls of the feet to the rigid skeleton that transmits the vibration through the connective tissue to all parts of the body.

Standing on the platform, while the platform moves up and down in rhythmic manner, is very similar to rebounding with smaller, faster, more powerful movements. The direct effects on the body are:

1. Alternating, longitudinal pressure on the bones.

2. Alternating pressure on the joints.

3. Small, rhythmic movements of all soft tissue and fascia.

4. Alternating tension on tendons and some ligaments.

Secondary physical effect:

1. Tension on the outside of the bones (from the pull on the muscles) and the increased longitudinal pressure on the bones mimics load bearing or resistance exercise and causes bones to increase mineral deposition.

2. Micro massaging of the joints increases range of motion and tendon health.

3. Micro massage of muscles and joints increases lymphatic drainage in much the same manner as a lymphatic massage.

4. Increases blood circulation, especially peripheral flow.

5. Neuro-muscular re-education, through the repeated passive movements imposed on the joints and muscles.

6. Fascia tends to dry out as we age, becoming stiff and tight. Whole body massage helps to stretch, loosen and rejuvenate the tissue so it can be more supple and resilient.
